What did you achieve during this creative residency ? What is the result (created work) ? Who was involved in the creation process ?
On 4th August, we started with the choreography creation process with mainly 7 local young dancers and choreographers, a visual art designer and a music producer to accompany us in the journey. The whole process took two weeks and on 15th to 20th we were performing and shooting to different locations in town. As the tough part ended, we jumped into the post-production of the picture sessions and the short film which took us about 3 weeks.
How do you think these activities contribute to a reflection on today’s world, in relation to the COVID-19 crisis, and/or on the shaping of the future ?
The whole Kigali on the Horizon pushes my local and international audience into a deep reflection of what is going on especially here in Kigali through my fictions characters, choreographic materials and the visual symbolism in both photograph series and my short film. Some of my non artists’ audience said that even if there are no words in my artwork, they managed to get the heaviness of the work.
How did you feel during the residency ? And at the end of it ?
The main aim for this work was to express ourselves artistically and use different art forms in order to bring out the authenticity of our Kigali life experience in regards to the pandemic of Covid19 and the future. To achieve that we gave ourselves the right to dream and merge those with the reality hence the idea of Kigali on the horizon work fiction concept.
In fact, we learnt a lot during the creation process through collaboration with different local artists in different art departments from music, fashion, conceptual art, photography, cinema to Dance Theater. It required us lot of trust, discipline, commitment and resilience to be able to bring the whole concept of KIGALI ON THE HORIZON from papers to virtual stage and Screens and in the end we were happy and satisfied with the results.
