Afrika Filmfestival (AFF) takes place from April the 20th till May the 5th 2018 in Leuven.
Several activities are planned for the 2018 festival as part of the partnership between AFF and Africalia :
Friday 20 April 2018 at 2:00 PM at M - Museum, Vanderkelenstraat 28, 3000 Leuven.
This year, the conference will focus on how and why images made by/about Africans - in a non-stereotypical way - find their way to the public. The channels that send Western images into the world, including to Africa, often only seem to function in one direction. Since these channels dominate the media landscape with their impact on culture, art and media, we may ask ourselves : how and why do images of Africans find their way to the audience ? It is a matter of cultural diversity, cultural enrichment, essential to exceed the limitations of ourselves.
The members of the international panel are : Yasser Booley (Photographer – South Africa), George Karanja (Coordinator of ASMO - Alliance for Slum Media Organisations – Kenya), Tessa Boerman (International Film Festival Rotterdam – Netherlands), Tsitsi Dangarembga (International Images Film Festival for Women – Zimbabwe) and Luciana Ceccatto Farah (Curator and filmmaker – Brazil).

19, 21 & 22 April 2018 at Foto Gamma, Diestsevest 39, 3000 Leuven.
Yasser ‘Mierkat’ Booley started producing photographs on the eve of the ‘new’ South Africa. Raised within the tension of a conservative Cape Malay home in a politically fraught South Africa, he soon became an observant apprentice, set on mastering the essence of the eclectic ‘rainbow nation’. This book is a celebration, an indulgent vision. Booley’s South Africa shows ordinary people caught at a crossroads, entangled in a dishevelled unity. He brings to light the beauty of humanity through all religious and cultural differences, through class and gender diversity. His character and style reveal an unbridled optimism, sprinkled with an accidental whiff of irony.
The exhibition presents a selection of photos of Yasser Booley from the book "South Africa at Liberty".
Opening and masterclass by Yasser Booley : 19 April, 8:00 PM
Exhibition : Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April, 2:00 PM > 7:00 PM
