AfriKera Arts Trust aims to contribute to contemporary dance training in Zimbabwe and to turn Zimbabwe into a major player in the Performing Arts and dance milieu.
Via AfriKera Professional Dance Training, AfriKera offers to 15 young men and women a three-year contemporary dance training course based on a broad professional curriculum. The good reputation of the school ensures regular collaborations and productions with other dance groups and choreographers from the region and neighbour countries to be part of the educational programme.
This intensive training equips the dancers to navigate and be employable in the Performing Arts. This resonates strongly in Zimbabwe, where the majority of the public don’t view dance as a tangible way of making a living.
Since the beginning of 2017, AfriKera has acquired its own Dance Theatre Hub, with 2 large dance studios and all facilities easily accessible in the centre (CBD) of Harare. It is the result of a unique public-private partnership between Africalia and the Meikles Foundation.
Programme 2017-2021 : Africalia supports AfriKera Professional Dance Training’s core staff costs and training activities to improve dance and production skills to a group of 15 young dancers during 3 years. On this programme, Afrikera also works closely with Music Crossroads Academy on music education and with Zimbabwe Theatre Academy on actor’s training.
