Africalia Editions & Roularta Books 2007
His very first exhibition brought him a prize for promising new artists from the Fondation Blachère d’Apt in Dakar in May 2006. It was a happy choice in the case of this “Shadow thief” who had emerged in the light of unadorned, trick-free photographs, hastily arranged in a gloomy, lowly corridor by their creator. Saïdou Dicko, a portrayer of the Sahel’s arid landscapes, had scareely been taking photographs for six months at the time, but what a talent! Breaths of fresh air, of inexpressible poetry, of tenderness and magical radiance, his snapshots of fleeting moments instinctively captivated crowds of connoisseurs, sated as they were with art of every genre. Dicko, a painter of heat-devastated plains where shade-thirsty cow graze, turned to pohtography to capture secret truths of a different kind, this time in bustling towns. Truths revealed by the trace they leave for a brief instant in the air of time as they pass. Truths which both convey our essence and unify us.
