VANSA is a network organization representing the interests of the visual arts sector in South Africa. Africalia works in contact with the National Office, now located in Johannesburg, but reaches all the provincial offices through them.

Major Representative in the visual arts, VANSA operates as a development agency for the sector. The network’s objectives are to reduce difficulties in access to finance, promote meetings and dialogue between members and with political policymakers to relationships with the private sector, relay information of interest within the sector, provide training and engage in advocacy for the visual arts. VANSA even goes further by setting up large-scale projects with a social/artistic emphasis and promoting research and innovation and forge international collaborations within the continent.

VANSA is seeking to strengthen its network and regional chapters (in KwaZulu-Natal (Durban), Gauteng (Johannesburg) or Western Cape) on an institutional basis through job creation and targeted training. In addition VANSA offers about 45 internships lasting 6 months to a year and runs an Internship Programme which allows PDIs (Previously Disadvantaged Individuals) to gain work experience at their regional offices and member organisations.

VANSA also wishes to continue to work on the network that it has built up following the large-scale residency and public art project “two thousand and ten reasons to live in a small town” which represents artists, collectives and organizations from rural areas.

Programme 2015-2016 : Africalia supports core staff costs, the internships and training activities ; and aims to strengthen the associative, administrative and financial management of provincial offices.
