Since 2017, Africalia has been implementing a programme of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) centred around culture and creativity. GCED is a process that aims to enable Belgian citizens to develop new perspectives on the structure of Western society, and to rethink the concepts of citizenship and democracy using appropriate tools. We believe that culture plays a critical role here.
Africalia’s programme in Belgium supports new cultural dynamics which reflect the cultural mix that defines our relationship with the modern world. The programme focuses on making Belgian cultural actors aware of issues emerging from the African continent and the African diasporas in Belgium.
The purpose of these actions is to :
1. Raise cultural operators’ awareness of contemporary African / Afro-descendant creativities that are socially aware, critical and productive of change.
2. Create a clear link with the programmes in Africa, and promote the idea in Belgium that culture builds bridges which can transcend borders and prejudices, and that here, as everywhere else, creativity is fertile ground for imagination, liberation and emancipation.
3. Work on increasing inclusiveness and on the notion of fair cultural cooperation and production within the Belgian cultural sector by taking a critical look at our artistic production practices.
