My artistic journey wasn’t the smoothest, with a trapeze as a prop finding a stage to perform had always been a problem , making me sometimes envy people with less demanding prop. But my difficulties have made me a better writter.
Having a chance to inspire the world through art during this pandemic is one of the reason I applied for this grant. The grant would be a great financial boost for me.
To create awareness of the aerial art in Kenya, create a free performance for street children and create more performances using storytelling on a trapeze.
What did you achieve during this creative residency ? What is the result (created work) ? Who was involved in the creation process ?
During the residence we found a new way of transmitting message through our activities which are mostly trapeze performances. The result is then a trapeze performance, filmed in a forest and involving two trapeze artists and a photographer.
How do you think these activities contribute to a reflection on today’s world, in relation to the COVID-19 crisis, and/or on the shaping of the future ?
I think that these activities for sure contribute to a reflection on today’s world and the crisis it is facing, because even if art itself isn’t able to change the world, it reminds us in the most amazing and beautiful way that "WE CAN" ! Art shocks, surprises, empowers, heals and enables us to make a change, to live happily despite any crisis. And most importantly, art gives us a chance to think deeply about who we are and what we can do.
How did you feel during the residency ? And at the end of it ?
Feelings of joy, excitement and stomach’s butterflies overwhelmed me when I saw my name on the winners list of AFRICALIA page. It vanished after a week leaving me with nothing but fears. I thought about so many questions such as : Will I impress people ? Will my project impact the world ? I was in a state of "happy-fear". But day by day I learnt, laughed, fell, cried, discovered new techniques, improved and most importantly I grew as an artist and as a person. This residency has made me stronger and bolder.
At the end of the residency, I believe that it is the beginning of another beautiful journey.
