SMAAKLIK, an artwork on Centrumplein in Ghent
The artwork SMAAKLIK of South African artist Ismail Farouk was installed in spring 2015 on the recent Centrumplein in Ledeberg (Hundelgemsesteenweg 125 9050 Ledeberg).
The work consists in several concrete blocks of different height, which together form the word SMAAKLIK, the equivalent of "Enjoy your meal" in Afrikaans.
Contemporary South African art
The artwork was carried out by the city of Ghent in collaboration with Africalia. The artist Ismail Farouk, who has already token part in various socio-artistic projects in Johannesburg, visited several times Ledeberg to get to know the neighbourhood, its associations and its residents.
Temporarily installed on the playground of Kleurdoos
Because of the delay of the reorganisation of the Centrumplein, the artwork was initially placed on the playground of the primary school Jenaplan Kleurdoos where it was an interesting object of play. During the school year 2014/2015, the sculpture was used as the basis for an educational North-South project, in collaboration with a South African school.
