The comic book Congo 50 contains the work of eight Congolese comic book artists who are members of the Kin Label organisation in Kinshasa. Their talents have been brought together to celebrate the first fifty years of independence for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This dynamic story is divided into eight sections consisting of six pages each, covering the past fifty years of Congolese independence. The life stories of the main characters, which form a coherent thread running through the stories, offer a perspective on this turbulent half-century. It is the story of twins Dipanda and Lipanda, a boy and a girl who were baptised in Kinshasa on 30 June 1960, the day when Congo became independent.
Each of the eight comic book artists belongs to a different artistic generation, and this is expressed through the following stories, which make up the comic book : Asimba Bathy "Indépendance Cha-cha" – Cara Bulaya "La longue marche" (The Long Walk) – Jules Baïsolé "Boum Yé !" – Didier Kawende "Kin La Belle" (Beautiful Kinshasa) – Fati Kabuika "Les affaires" (Business) – Djemba Djeis "Dans les camps" (In the Camps) – Tetshim "Katanga" – Jason Kibiswa "Bâtir l’avenir" (Building the Future).
The whole presentation is made clearer by means of a political and also a cultural/historical timeline which follows the story, together with an explanation of the evolution of the country’s various flags and the associated shifts in power.
This comic book therefore has considerable educational value, with a light-hearted approach making it very accessible to a wide audience and particularly to young people.
